Unique views and point of interests are the so-called Chinese fishing nets (Cheena vala) and the fishermen working there: commonly known as “Chinese fishing nets” they are shore operated , each measering about 10 metres (33 ft) in height, sustaining a cantilever with an outstretched net of 20 metres (66 ft) or more, suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end. Each installation is operated by a team of up to six fishermen.
Other points of interests include the jetty towards the Vembanad Lake respectively to the Kerala backwaters. Colonial-style bungalows can be seen along the shoreline, as well as the Vasco da Gama square, the remains of Fort Emmanuel along the granite walkway and lots of small stalls, which make traditional cuisines using freshly caught fish. A section of the beach is not accessible to visitors as it is under the control of the Indian Navy.

Cherai Beach

Cherai beach is located in Kochi Taluk ,Kerala,India. Cherai Beach is just 25 km from Kochi, and 30 km from Cochin International Airport. The nearest towns are North Paravur and Kodungallur (10 km) and the nearest railway station Aluva (20 km).

Varkala Beach

Also known as “Papanasham Beach”is a beach in Varkala, Thiruvananthapuram,  Kerala,India .along the Arabian Sea, part of the Indian Ocean. The word Papanasham means wash away sins.  Which is considered to have medicinal and curative properties.It is believed that a dip in the waters of Papanasham Beach washes away all the sins in one’s life.

Varkala beach is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. These tertiary sedimentary formation cliffs are a unique geological feature on the otherwise flat Kerala coast, and is known among geologists as Varkala Formation and a geological monument as declared by the Geological Survey of India.   • Lighthouse Beach :
The southernmost beach, the Lighthouse Beach is the one most frequented by tourists, Lighthouse Beach got its name due to the old Vizhinjam Lighthouse located on a 35 meter high on top of the Kurumkal hillock. The lighthouse is built using stones, is colored in red and white bands and enjoys a height of 118 feet.It’s intermittent beams at night render the beach with an unearthly charm.

  • Hawah Beach :
Eve’s Beach, more commonly known as Hawa Beach, ranks second, in the early day, is a beehive of activities with fishermen setting out for sea. With a high rock promontory and a calm bay of blue waters, this beach paradise creates a unique aquarelle on moonlit nights.
  • Samudra Beach :
A large promontory separates this part from the southern side. Samudra Beach doesn’t have tourists thronging there or hectic business. The local fishermen ply their trade on this part.

 

The larger of the beaches is called Lighthouse Beach for its 35 metre high light house which towers over it atop Kurumkal hillock.The sands on the beaches in Kovalam are partially black in colour due to the presence of “ilmenite” and “Monazite”.Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala, is just 16 km away from Kovalam

Marari Beach
